The birds featured on these designs are a common sight on the island with the exception a couple which are more difficult/rare to spot. The names of the birds are: tītitipounamu/Rifleman, kōtuku/White heron, kākāriki / New Zealand parakeet, hihi/Stitchbird, kererū/New Zealand pigeon, pīwakawaka/Fantail.
