Earrings- harakeke/Flax
These handmade earrings depict the leaves of the harakeke / flax bush.
Harakeke has been a valuable resource to both the people and the fauna of Aotearoa. Early inhabitants traditionally utilised its fibres and other parts of the plant for many practical and medicinal purposes. It is also a source of shelter and food to a wide range of native species. You can see this in action on Tiritiri Matangi Island when the harakeke is in flower and birds such as tūī, korimako & hihi land on them to feed.
