Research Opportunities
As a popular tourist destination with a rich history, and a well established wildlife population, Tiritiri Matangi is a magnet for researchers working across a variety of fields from ecologists to social scientists.
Since being designated an open Scientific Reserve in 1980, the island has hosted dozens of researchers (link to list) who undertake projects to discover more about the island’s threatened species or conduct research in areas such as conservation management and sustainable tourism.
The Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi (SoTM) administers grants for academics, students, community groups, schools and members of the public to undertake research.
Research in all disciplines relevant to the management and development of the island will be considered, including ecological science, history, cultural, social and management studies.
As a guide to the kinds of projects that could be considered in the broad field of ecological science, a useful starting point is the Tiritiri Matangi Island Biodiversity Plan 2013, which sets out the proposed management of the island’s biodiversity up to 2023.

There are two closing dates per year for applications: 15 March and 15 September.
