This award-winning book has been the bible for Tiri people since it was first published in 2004. About 5,000 copies were sold before the publishers allowed the book to go out of print in 2018. [OR ‘before it went out of print in 2018’]
It has been sorely missed, but now the SOTM has funded a reprint which is exactly the same as the 2004 book.
The Tiri book, as it is known, covers the entire history of the island, from the early Maori occupation, through the farming era, the extensive lighthouse and signal station history, the planting period, and the contributions of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park Board, DOC, scientists, and all the volunteers, which has culminated in today’s world-famous and hugely successful Open Sanctuary. There are chapters on the flora and fauna, and essential lists of birds, plants, lighthouse keepers, etc.
“Tiritiri Matangi: a Model of Conservation” has 152 pages and is lavishly illustrated.
In early 2021 Anne Rimmer published a supplement to the old Tiri book, titled “Tiritiri Matangi 2005-2020”. This 88-page book contains all-new material and photographs, bringing the history of the island right up to date.
